After she recovered, we talked a little bit about some other crossover and AU ideas (modern AU: Elizabeth gets Georgiana tipsy and drags her up on stage for karaoke)… and I discovered that I couldn’t NOT write Edrington/Darcy.

It’s not shippy, it’s more FWB, and it doesn’t in any way interfere with the canon Darcy/Elizabeth, because that would be WRONG. In fact, it’s Edrington offering supportive advice to Darcy. Just, y’know. In bed and naked. Though it’s more of a Maurice R than NC-17.

Yes, Wellard feels! The naval punishment was a small thing, I think, and in book two. There might be more, but he was basically told ‘Yes, it sucks, but War, so we’re not going to go messing with that now.’ (it was in 1806).

I stumbled over it during research, but have gone back to the beginning after that first bit, because it’s awesome. (That bit is close to the beginning of volume 2). I was sending it to auntiehornblower and flailing because her Archie goes on to be an MP, so he would TOTALLY support that discussion.

It’s the memoirs and extracts from letters of Sir Samuel Romilly, and it’s on google books - here are volumes one and two. He seems to have known lots of reform-y types - Erskine, Wilberforce, Fox, etc. I’m about to get to the French revolution bits, which I have little extra knowledge about but I was thinking you’d be interested in. He knew Mirabeau very well, and he was in France in 1789 to study the revolution, I think. He also spent time in Geneva and wrote lots to Dumont.

Oh, and I’m researching this because I’m writing a thing where I basically save Jack Hammond (save ALL THE CUTE MIDDIES). He’s going to go be a barrister when he makes it home and recovers, and this guy is going to be his mentor. It was so accidental that I stumbled across this, but he’s PERFECT. The lawyer Romilly served his articles with thought he wouldn’t be a good barrister because he was too shy! ;sdkgh;sdlkghg help.

(but be warned: it will give you lots of feels, because he was adorably in love with his wife and his death isn’t very happy D:)
